The Ultimate Guide to Dosing Edibles

3Leaf_Ultimate Edibles Dosage Guide

Cannabis-infused edibles are an ideal consumption method if you are looking for a safe, consistent, and long-lasting experience. Understanding dosing is crucial for ensuring that your experience meets your expectations. We put together a simple guide so that you can better understand what to expect from different doses.

The first step with edibles is purchasing products that are compliant with state regulations, from state-licensed California retailers. Compliant California edibles must undergo rigorous lab-testing to ensure that they are healthy and safe as indicated in the State’s standards. Start by finding a licensed retailer near you, and then follow these steps when choosing your edible.

UNDERSTAND THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THC AND CBD

California edibles can contain up to 10 milligrams of cannabis in an individual serving. They can contain a variety of cannabinoids, but the most common cannabinoids found in edibles today are tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). Look for the cannabinoid content listed on the front of the package.

THC provides what is known as a psychoactive high. Its effects range from mildly uplifting to full-blown euphoria. A micro-dose of THC can alleviate anxiety and make you feel creative and motivated. Too much THC can induce feelings of paranoia or nausea, so it’s best to stick to a micro- or low-dose if you’re just starting to experiment with edibles.

CBD is non-intoxicating – it does not create the feeling of being high. Instead, it promotes relaxation in the body. CBD infused edibles are often used for post-workout recovery because it alleviates muscle tension and promotes rest. In addition, CBD mellows the elevating effects of THC. To experience the best of both cannabinoids, ask your budtender about ratio-infused edibles.

FIND THE EDIBLE DOSE TO MEET YOUR NEEDS

Before talking to your budtender, it’s helpful to have some cannabis terms down. In our guide, we outline what constitutes a micro-dose, a low-dose, a 1:1 ratio-dose, and a medium-dose. We provide insight into how you can expect to feel from each dose, as well as recommendations on the best time to experiment with the different doses that can be infused in edibles.

It’s also helpful to know what type of cannabis is infused in your edible. For example, 3LEAF infuses a clean distillate with high purity into our edibles. This provides a different experience when compared to edibles infused with flower or other types of concentrates. To better understand the type of experience that distillate infused edibles provide, read our post on cannabis distillate.

REMEMBER, LOW AND SLOW WHEN DOSING WITH EDIBLES

When consuming edibles, be patient. It can take between 30 and 90 minutes for edibles to take effect compared to smoking or vaping, which takes between 10 and 20 minutes to take effect. When consuming edibles, the cannabinoids are passed through the liver and then processed through the blood-brain barrier. This process takes longer, but it creates more intense and longer-lasting effects, which means you can consume a lower dose to experience the effects you’re looking for.

Ultimately, it’s important to know that your cannabis experience will be entirely unique to you. It requires experimentation to find what dose works best for you. But, following this guide will give you some insight into what to expect so that you can enjoy a consistent and effective experience.

Fitness Motivation: How Cannabis Motivated Dexter Holman to Lose Over 100 Pounds

From NCAA defensive lineman weighing over 300 pounds to fit-bodied reality tv-star, Dexter Holman tells 3Leaf about his weight loss journey and how cannabis helped motivate him while overcoming stress, pressure, and Khloe Kardashian.

You grew up in Georgia and played football for years. Has cannabis always been a part of your life?

When I was growing up, like everybody else, I didn’t associate cannabis with being an athlete. It was something that I would do in the off-season in both high-school and college because of the risk of getting in trouble

I played college football at Coastal Carolina University. I was playing defensive tackle, which means I was really, really big. I had gained a lot of weight. I was gaining about 25 pounds per year. And while it was intentional, it wasn’t healthy weight and it got out of control. I lost myself in trying to be this football player, trying to make it in the NFL. I didn’t make it, and once everything was over, all I had left was all this weight.

My cannabis use really kicked into gear when I was trying to lose weight. At my biggest, I was 328 pounds and when I moved to California I weighed 275 pounds. I moved out here knowing I wanted to make myself better and also motivate others at the same time.

In 2016, Dexter moved to California with the intent of launching his career as a stand-up comedian. While performing at The Lexington in Los Angeles a producer from Khloe Kardashian’s Revenge Body asked him to be a part of the show. What ensued was nothing short of a physical and mental rollercoaster.

It was 14 weeks of filming and there is no way I would have made it through that without cannabis [laughs]. It was one of the most stressful situations I’ve ever been in; it was a lot of pressure. And I was putting my body through so many things that it wasn’t used to.

At that time, I was alone and kind of depressed. And cannabis helped me to get out of that depression, out of that feeling of helplessness, and back to that feeling that I could do things. It helped me realize that I am not my fat and I am not my weight.

One of the coolest things I got to do while I was on the show was work out with Michael B. Jordan. At my heaviest I was working out with him, and I remember thinking that the only difference between me and Michael B. Jordan is habits. It’s what you choose to do on a daily basis. So I changed all my habits because I want my habits to represent what I want for my life. I don’t want to just take what I can get. My goal every day is to make myself better than yesterday.

“I want my habits to represent what I want for my life,” says Holman.

What does a typical day of training look like for you, and how does cannabis benefit your routine?

Today, I ran a mile-and-a-half to the gym and followed it with an upper body workout – triceps, biceps, shoulders, and back. Then I sweat it out in the sauna for 25 minutes and ran the mile-and-a-half back home. I typically train for two to three hours a day.

People think that cannabis is only for getting stoned, but that isn’t true – just look at me. It puts you in an optimal state of consciousness where you can really focus on yourself and the task at hand.

Before a workout, I use it to help me get into the moment. Micro-dosing helps me get into that flow-state, it’s perfect for that. It puts you in a state where you aren’t spaced out and your coordination isn’t off. It quiets my thoughts about everybody else, my relationships, my stresses, and whatever else I have going on in my life – it lets me just be in that moment. And that’s where I like to be when I workout. I like to be in the moment and not focused on anything except for my workout because that’s what gets the best results.

After, it helps me with my pain management. Initially, I was always sore because I was working out so much more than I was used to. I’ll get a massage with CBD topicals after a workout to help my muscles from getting sore throughout the day. I also use it for sleep management – rest is crucial for recovery. I’ll smoke and eat edibles to help me get a good sleep. I wouldn’t recommend it to the whole world, but for me personally, it’s what helps me.

For those who are interested in incorporating cannabis into their fitness routine, what would you recommend?

I think the best way to start out is doing something more like yoga, something that you can ease into so that you can observe your body and how it reacts to the cannabis and your movements.

A lot of times before hitting the gym people will feel like, “ah, I don’t want to be here.” But when you get in that flow-sate from cannabis it puts you in that moment, in that headspace of: I’m here and I just want to do the best that I possibly can with my time. And micro-dosing is perfect for that. Really, it’s up to you to figure out what works for you. Micro-dosing is definitely a good place to start though.

Dexter knows what works for him and doesn’t recommend his consumption methods or dose for everyone. Similar to what Gina discusses in our last post, dosage and preferred consumption method are entirely personal.

“My goal every day is to make myself better than yesterday,” says Holman.

3Leaf on How To Optimize Your Workout with Cannabis

What do you get when you mix high amounts of positive energy, solid muscle, and a wealth of knowledge about the benefits of cannabis? You have Gina, who is part of the 3Leaf team and works closely with our customers. If you’re curious about how cannabis can help you surpass your fitness goals by maximizing your potential pre-, during, and post-workout, Gina is the person you want to talk to. She works out six days a week through a mix of high-intensity interval training and cardio, weight lifting, modified Crossfit, and hot yoga, and she incorporates cannabis into every workout.

Previously Gina didn’t think cannabis could help her before or during her workouts, because they are intense in nature. She reserved it for low-impact workouts, like hiking or yoga and used it for recovery after an intense workout; she assumed that cannabis would impair her mobility. In 2018 Gina discovered that micro-dosing with properly dosed products significantly improved her workouts and benefitted her active lifestyle beyond her expectations.

Gina is often at a dispensary near you that carries 3Leaf products. If you haven’t met her yet read her tips below to learn how cannabis optimizes her fit lifestyle.

Pre-workout

After consuming a micro-dose of THC, when Gina enters the gym she’s able to quiet all of the other things on her mind. She is entirely focused on her goals for that particular workout.

“It changes your perspective and your focus. It makes you much more connected with your body,” says Gina. “When I start to feel the effects of cannabis I make a point to set an intention that I carry through my workout. It may be strength, endurance, form, or just getting through it, but cannabis helps me to keep that intention present throughout my workout.”

Focus is key to properly execute a physically and mentally demanding workout, but proper preparation in the lead-up is just as important. Warming up before a workout is crucial for preventing injury, and it will allow you to get deeper into the motions. Pushing yourself even slightly beyond your threshold increases muscle tearing and therefore improves the rate at which your muscles grow. Prior to consuming cannabis before a workout, Gina would immediately get into her cardio circuit or heavy lifting without stretching. With cannabis helping her dial into what her body needs, stretching before every workout has become a key priority.

During

“Cannabis allows me to get deeper into those poses that I have to hold,” says Gina. “It allows me to connect with my body. And it helps me to suspend other thoughts – the thoughts that are not relevant to me in that moment.”

Each time you head to the gym, roll out your yoga mat, get on your bike, or press play on a workout video, you make a conscious choice to do something entirely for yourself – something to make yourself a little bit better. When your mind wanders during a workout – we’re all guilty of this – you aren’t getting the most out of the activity you’ve chosen to engage in. When you’re thinking of what to pick up at the grocery store or the emails you have to send, you aren’t focusing on form and posture, two of the most important factors in any workout. Without proper form, you run the risk of injuring yourself; moreover, improper form can seriously slow your progress. If you’re going to take time out of your day to workout, you should do what you can to get the most out of it.

“After I’ve consumed cannabis and worked out, I feel like the hour that I dedicated was a true oasis in my day,” says Gina.

For Gina, the time she spends working out early in the morning, or having the gym to look forward to at the end of the day benefits her overall day beyond the one hour she carves out for herself. It helps her remain calm and patient in stressful or demanding situations.

After

Two of the most important factors in proper post-workout recovery are nutritious foods and lots of rest. When choosing foods, pick ones that are high in protein and low in sugar.

Gina makes a point to differentiate how she doses after a morning workout versus an evening workout. In the morning, she’ll eat one of 3Leaf’s ratio infused treats. The equal combination of a low-dose of THC and CBD provides a balanced experience. It allows her to relax after a strenuous workout without experiencing an overly elevating effect – perfect before a full day of work. And the effects of CBD are particularly beneficial for healing in post-workout recovery as it helps stave off soreness. If she exercises in the evening, she’ll have a 3Leaf Quinoa Granola Bite or Coconut Oatmeal Cookie after. The 10 mg of THC distillate infused in each piece provides a calming effect so that she can get a full night’s sleep.

“Many people avoid working out late at night because it boosts their energy levels up which can take away from their sleep,” says Gina. “Because I’m such a high-energy person this is an issue for me. But eating an edible after a workout ensures that I’ll get a restful sleep. And it means that I have more options for times to workout.”

How did Gina figure out what dose worked best for her? Trial and error. She says that because cannabis use is entirely personal, it’s up to each individual to take responsibility for their experience – and that’s the fun part! Some factors that you need to consider are timing and what you’ve eaten that day. Edibles can take between 30 and 90 minutes to take effect, and it will most likely take longer if you’ve had a lot to eat. For those who are new to cannabis, she says it’s best If you start with a micro-dose and consume slowly, and initially try it before a low-impact workout before incorporating it into high-intensity training.

3Leaf’s Top Moments in Cannabis 2018

This is the perfect time to reflect on the past year. As we look back at 2018, the theme that comes to mind for the cannabis community is: triumphs and challenges.

Throughout the year we saw cannabis make significant strides into mainstream culture:

Step-by-step the prohibition of cannabis is being removed, right before our eyes.

In California we made significant progress in 2018 towards making cannabis increasingly safe and accessible. The State introduced requirements for lab testing of all products sold to consumers, making sure that compliant cannabis is free of pesticides, residual solvents, microbes and other chemicals. These lab tests also validated the dosage noted on the containers, so retailers and consumers can feel safe about the product. The State’s regulations also laid out what information was required on the packaging and took measures to protect children against accidental consumption. These regulations also ensured that all cannabis was handled and sold by valid license holders.

But, we are still in the early stages of a budding industry (pun intended). Everyone in the California cannabis community – cultivators and processors, manufacturers, distributors, retailers, and consumers – has had to navigate through changes to regulations in a small window of time.

We would agree that there remains areas for improvements with these regulations, and we look forward to seeing those in 2019. There are a couple of items worth noting here:

  1. The removal of product images on labels and packaging.

The fact that we are unable to showcase on the label what is inside the packaging is contrary to traditional practices in consumer packaged goods. Showing the product on the outside of a package creates transparency on the part of the manufacturer, and allows consumers to make better informed decisions by being able to see what it is they are purchasing.

  1. Products no longer have to come in child-proof packaging.

When adult-use was legalized in California, it was required that all cannabis products must be sold in child-proof packaging. The latest draft of regulations introduced in mid December, set to take effect in January 2019, now exclude child-proof packaging as a requirement. Keeping cannabis away from children is a top priority for most in the industry. Cannabis should bring you peace of mind, and child-proof packaging allows you to store products in your home without having to worry. While it is no longer a requirement, 3Leaf will continue to sell our products in child-proof packaging.

All 3Leaf products will continue to be sold in childproof packaging.

As we look back at 2018, the triumphs certainly outweigh the challenges. A particular triumph for 3Leaf was the introduction of our new line of natural Fruit Jellies. When we began working on the product line, we knew that we wanted to elevate the ever popular gummy, and we wanted to provide consumers with options for a micro- and low-dose of THC. So, we worked tirelessly with our food scientist to craft edibles with the highest quality natural ingredients without any refined sugar, or artificial flavors or colors. And, we opted to make our fruit jellies without any preservatives. They have a shorter shelf life by design. In true 3Leaf form, we crafted a product that consumers can trust to provide a consistently effective experience, and that they can enjoy without any worry or guilt.

This year we were able to partner with some amazing event curators in the California cannabis community. With a mix of both entertainment and education, we saw individuals from all walks of life come together to celebrate, socialize, and learn about the benefits of cannabis and the changing industry. Check out some of our favorite events of the year, and make sure to keep an eye out for what these fantastic organizers have in-store for 2019.

With a new year now upon us, we want to thank you first for all of your support in 2018.

Thank you to our fantastic retail partners! You have given us unwavering support since 3Leaf introduced our first two products in late October 2017, with our Coconut Oatmeal Cookies and Quinoa Granola Bites. It’s our goal to offer products of the highest quality that enable consumers to live life to the fullest. Without our retail partners, it would be impossible for us to bring 3Leaf to consumers. So, thank you, thank you, thank you!

And, to each and every one of you who took a chance on a fresh brand on the scene, thank you for trying something new. To everyone who comes up to meet our team at our in-store demo days, thank you – we love talking to you and hearing what you have to say. Connecting with you and hearing your stories continuously inspires us to be better in what we do.

From our whole team, we wish you all the best for the rest of 2018 and nothing but good things for 2019!

How to Tell If Your Edible Is Safe

You care about what you put into your body; you do your research, consult with the people you trust, and you take time to check the ingredients and nutrition facts. When it comes to choosing edibles, why lower your standards? If you ask us you shouldn’t, especially now that you don’t have to. With the legalization of adult-use in California, a variety of regulations were introduced and industry standards were set to ensure that consumers can safely enjoy  cannabis products. Edibles have a particular set of regulations that manufacturers must meet. And these regulations cover everything from dosage per serving to the packaging the product is sold in. Compliant edibles allow you to enjoy a pleasant and stress-free cannabis experience.

However, we are still in the early stages of the State legalized cannabis industry and a black market still exists. So, there are edibles available that may not be compliant with the State’s regulations, and therefore may not be entirely safe for consumption. Non-compliant edibles do not undergo lab-testing, and so we can’t be entirely sure if they are free from  pesticides or solvents. Black market products may not be tested to ensure that they are accurately dosed, making it hard to feel confident of a consistent and safe experience. Edibles manufacturers that are compliant have to maintain transparency in listing every ingredient included in each baked good, fruit jelly, or beverage; non-compliant manufacturers may not adhere to the same standards, leaving you to play a guessing game. And when you care about the food you’re consuming, guessing games simply do not cut it.

3Leaf is proud to be fully compliant with California cannabis regulations, and our simple diagram below points out the key indicators of how to tell if your edible is compliant.

1.  Tamper evidence.

Edibles must have some sort of seal to indicate that the package has not been opened before you make your purchase. In our case, 3Leaf packages are heat sealed. You’ll find that you can’t open one without tearing into the small grooves that you see here.

2. Opaque Packaging

The product within the package cannot be visible whatsoever.

3. Child-Resistant Packaging.

Starting in January 2019, according to the new draft of California cannabis regulations, edibles will no longer have to be sold in child resistant packaging. This will come under review in January 2020.

That being said, we have always and will always sell 3Leaf edibles in child-resistant packaging.

4. California’s Cannabis Symbol.

Edibles must show the California Cannabis Symbol on the front of the package so that anyone can easily tell that it is a cannabis infused product and not a traditional food item.

5. Cannabis Infused.

In addition to the California Cannabis Symbol, the words Cannabis Infused must appear directly near the product name. It has to be crystal clear that the package contains cannabis. And again, this must appear on the front of the package.

6. Cannabinoid Content.

Cannabinoids must be listed in milligrams per serving for edibles. Both tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) must be listed on the front of the package.

7. Serving Size.

Product labels must specify if the package contains multiple servings. And if there is more than one serving the packaging must be resealable. Compliant edibles will specify the total amount of cannabis in the package, as well as the total amount of individual pieces.

8. Government warning.

The government warning must appear with the exact wording you see here. It must be plainly visible and easy to read, and it can appear on either the back or the front of the packaging.

9. Manufacturer Contact Information.

This makes it easy to verify the producer of the edibles and provides a convenient way to contact them should you need to.

10. Proposition 65 Warning.

Under California’s Proposition 65, a product that contains any of the harmful chemicals listed here must have a Prop-65 warning. The warning must appear in plain site on either side of the packaging with no obstructions from other words or designs.

11. Ingredients list.

All of the food ingredients must be listed from most to least. This allows you to make better informed purchasing decisions.

12. Nutritional facts.

The mandatory nutrients that must be listed are: calories, total fat, saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol, sodium, total carbohydrate, dietary fiber, sugar, protein, vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium, and iron.

When purchasing any cannabis products it’s best to buy compliant products from licensed California retailers. This will help ensure a safe and effective cannabis experience. If you have any questions about compliant edibles, or if you would like to learn more about 3Leaf, please reach out to us at [email protected].

Ratio Products: The Balance You’ve Been Looking For

Balance. It’s something we all strive for, and we make choices every day that tip the scales one way or the other. Things like deciding whether to stay late at the office, or leave early to make it home for dinner with the family; to sit at your desk to get through emails or take 30 minutes to get a workout in; to choose the buttery scone or bowl of oats to go with your latte order. It’s all a part of the human experience, something we’re all trying to navigate.

If you are suffering from decision fatigue, one less thing you have to worry about is choosing between THC and CBD. Ratio products offer a combination of the two, and have become increasingly popular with those who want to experience the benefits of both cannabinoids for  what many call a balanced cannabis experience. If you’re curious about the effects of ratio products, read on to gain a basic understanding of the two most popular cannabinoids and what you can expect when consuming them together.

Wait, you keep using the word cannabinoid. What is that?

Cannabinoids are a class of chemical compounds that produce a diverse range of healing and therapeutic effects. There are two types of cannabinoids: endocannabinoids are naturally produced within the human body and phytocannabinoids are found within the trichomes of the cannabis plant.

A cannabis bud covered in trichomes.                                                                                                   A close-up of a trichome.

Both phyto- and endocannabinoids work with receptors in our endocannabinoid system (ECS). which plays a key role in maintaining homeostasis within our body.

The ECS works to balance the effects of both internal and external stressors, and it would not be able to do so without the help of cannabinoids.

The two most commonly recognized receptors in the ECS are CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors are predominantly found in the central nervous system and peripheral organs, and CB2 receptors are primarily located in the immune system.

Now let’s take a look at two of the most commonly recognized cannabinoids and the effects they produce before we learn how they work together.

Tetrahydrocannabinol – more than a means to an elevated state of being.

Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is known for its elevating and uplifting effects, commonly referred to as a high. THC is typically associated with recreational cannabis use because of the feelings of euphoria that it’s able to produce. But its medicinal properties should not be overlooked.

Research shows that THC can act as an effective antidepressant. A low-dose can elevate mood and calm anxiety, and is proven to be useful in treating post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), as well as severe depression and anxiety. In one particular study, THC showed significant antidepressant like effects when the participants consumed a dose of 2.5 mg – a micro-dose by community standards.

Not only can THC improve our mental-state, it’s also known to treat various physical ailments and issues. It offers relief from chronic pain, acts as a powerful anti-inflammatory – helpful for those with arthritis – and is proven to alleviate nausea and vomiting – often a side-effect of chemotherapy treatment.

It’s important to note that THC is a powerful psychoactive stimulant that can produce intoxicating effects, which can be disorienting and sometimes unpleasant. To avoid any adverse effects, start with a micro- or low-dose of THC, and if you choose to increase the dose, do it slowly. Wait at least two hours before consuming more, especially with edibles as it takes longer to feel the effects.

Another way to mitigate the chance of feeling over-stimulated from THC is to incorporate CBD into your consumption method.

Cannabidiol – healing, therapeutic, and so much more.

Cannabidiol (CBD) is appealing to many because it produces a myriad of healing and medicinal effects, but is non-intoxicating. If you want to avoid feeling high, CBD is a great option for you.

After consuming CBD, you will typically feel more relaxed and less tense.

In a study from HelloMD, 80 percent of respondents said that they found CBD to be an effective form of treatment. Those who participated in the study used CBD most commonly for insomnia, depression, anxiety, and joint pain. CBD is also proven to effectively treat such issues as: epileptic seizures, muscle convulsions and spasms, psoriasis and eczema, and inflammation.

CBD has become increasingly popular amongst those who are physically active. After a workout, a dose of CBD will help relieve aches and pains and keep your muscles from tensing up. And, since CBD is non-intoxicating, you can feel great about consuming after your early-morning workout before you head into the office. The CBD will allow your body to feel relaxed while allowing your mind to feel clear- the perfect combination for tackling the day ahead.

Better together: when THC and CBD are combined.

The harmonious combination of THC and CBD produces a unique set of benefits that cannot be achieved when consumed on their own.

Because of the way in which CBD interacts with our ECS receptors, CBD tends to elevate the positive effects of THC while minimizing the negative. By inhibiting THC’s ability to bind with our receptors, you are able to avoid any overstimulation, and instead achieve a more relaxed state-of-being. And, CBD actually slows down the breakdown of THC in the liver, therefore prolonging the medicinal effects of THC. It isn’t all one sided though. THC enhances the effects of CBD, because it binds more effectively with our CB1 receptors.

Ratio products are offered in different combinations, so you can choose from a variety of ratios to meet your specific needs:

  • Lower in THC and higher in CBD, i.e. 2.5 mg THC to 25 mg of CBD. This combination will allow you to enjoy the medicinal benefits of CBD with a mild psychoactive experience from the THC.
  • Equal parts THC and CBD, i.e. 5 mg of THC to 5 mg of CBD. Remember, the THC will elevate the healing effects of CBD, while the CBD will calm the elevating effects of THC. This allows for a relaxing, therapeutic experience.

We still have a long way to go in understanding the effects of both cannabinoids individually and collectively, but there is enough evidence to prove that the combination of the two are certainly effective. Both offer the benefits of alleviating chronic pain, minimizing anxiety, treating depression, and acting as an anti-inflammatory and sleep-aid. But when combined, the two are all the more powerful.

We are excited to share with you that 3Leaf will be releasing our line of Ratio Treats soon! Our Double Chocolate Cookie and Peanut Butter Cookie combine 5 mg of THC with 5 mg of CBD for a perfectly balanced cannabis experience.
